Now that manga is well established, we start seeing comics from other Asian countries, which is great because there a are a lot of great artists out there.
So at the last Angouleme comics convention, I took a chance and bought a Corean one, CatZ by Ki-hyun Byun, on the sole basis that the drawings looked good and that it was a full story in 2 volumes, so I wouldn't be bound to yet another series if I liked it... (^_^;
So I read the 1st one and later bought the 2nd because it is a really good Manhwa.
The drawings are beautiful, full color, in a water paint style. They also have en identity of their own compared to manga. They have a sense of strong realism coupled with some expressions that are clearly "cartoonish", to great effect.
And then more importantly there's the story.
It follows a girl who gets a job of selling ice creams in a sort of Corean Disney land. She meets then befriends a strange guy who's disguised as a mascot, a forgotten super hero called CatZ. Or is he CatZ himself?
She wanders off in his world to fight P, his nemesis. In the mean time in the "real" world we follow 2 cops that investigate on a case where some children are being attacked and are subsequntly found to be mute, as if their voice had been stolen (which is what P does...).
As the investigation progresses and the characters develo, dreams and reality collide, to the point where you really don't know where to stand. Is the CatZ mascot the real CatZ? Is there a P really going around stealing voices? Is that all a messed up dream? Who would be dreaming by the way?
It's very cleverly written, very subtle, even with the final staying quite mysterious.
It's a dark journey in the mind of a youth trying to escape a reality that's too heavy to bear.
Definitely worth a read.

Langue de bois.
Je ne suis en aucun cas un fan de foot (encore que je sais apprecier un bon match quand j'en vois un) mais aujourd'hui e n zappant a la tv, je suis tombe sur une interview de Jose Murinho, ex-coach du club de Chelsea, qui devait affronter Manchester United dans l'apres-midi.
A la question "que doivent faire les joueurs de Chelsea pour gagner", le Jose (au passage il a l'air aimable comme une porte de prison...) a repondu par un speech de 5minutes pour dire en gros: "les joueurs savent ce qu'il faut faire, ils ont deja joue contre ManU, ils ont deja battu ManU, ce qu'il faut c'est qu'ils sortent sur le terrain et jouent au football, en marquant des buts."
Un bel exemple de parlotte pour ne rien dire d'interessant, que bien des hommes politiques auraient pu lui envier je pense... :)

Underworld Evolution.
The 1st Underworld was a pleasant surprise to me and since it was a direct setup to the sequel, I had to get to see it...
It's now done. :)
The 2 films work more or less as one as the 2nd starts exactly where the 1st one left us...
I thought the 1st one was a bit of a slow starter, with the best bits at the end. Here it starts off really well with a great opening medieval scene. And you get to see good werewolves. Not the kind where you actually only see the head or the upper body in the dark. No here you have full werewolves in the full light (of torches)!
And it carries on nicely with cool fights and monsters and more gore in 15min than the whole 1st one!
It's therefore a bit disappointing that the story loses momentum.
The thing I loved in the 1st one is that it gave you a glimpse of what suggested a rich and complex universe (the vampire society and politics, teh war with the wrewolves...). Unfortunately, in this one as the story develop they just reduce that to a single thread that for me lacked something.
It was still good but it didn't go beyond that...
But anyway, still a good series, still beautifully shot and still entertaining...

SPL.
I finally got round to see this movie that was quite hyped when it came out a few years ago. It was said it was announcing the return of the HK police movie golden age.
And I have to say, it doesn't disappoint.
Following the story of a dying cop that sets out to catch a mob boss at all cost,
the story is not really original in itself. It carries familiar themes of redemption and that you somehow need to become a criminal to catch one. But it's very well told, takes time to develop its characters (in line with Infernal Affairs) and always stays in very dark territories.
It's supported by excellent actors, lead by Samo Hung, Donnie Yen & Simon Yam.
Samo Hung takes an obvious pleasure to portray a truly evil mob boss, not his usual trade.
The fact of having such skilled martial artists as Hung & Yen (and also Wu Jing) also promises some good fights. On that point also the movie delivers. Having been influenced by Ong Bak, Donnie Yen, who choreographed the action, has taken a very brutal and dirty approach. This gives some gritty fight, fast & furious, mixing various styles.
Last but not least, the photography is beautiful, playing with colours and contrasts.
So yeah a excellent movie, happily mixing action & drama, whose quality traces back to the best John Woo's...

One Night At McCool's
2 words: Liv Tyler.

And a last one: fun.
In a way it's a movie to te glory of the dirty pigs all of us men are...
Who could say no to her?
Nothing's changed after this (but nothing ever changes after a movie anyway), but you've laughed and you've seen nice pictures... (T-T)
And you even might have wished you were John Goodman. Kind of.
Good cast, playing a varied bunch of losers, enjoyable script, good dialogues. All good!
To think I have a DVD player... No foutain though. Anyway.

S1m0ne
The 2nd movie by Andrew Niccol (who did Gattaca 1st and Lord Of War then) goes very well as companion piece to Being John Malkovich.
Both are indeed about recluse and misunderstood characters that use the fame of another to get through to their public.
Except that here, Viktor Taransky (the genius director that is so uncompromising in his vision that nobody go to see his movies) creates the "other one". He then gets caught at his own game, as he's convinced everyone that his Simone is real and the media carries on from there.
"What is real?" and "do you really control what you've created?" are important themes.
The movie has light moments, with the escalation of lies and the overblown interest of people towards a figure that doesn't exist (more ironically: the woman they worship is in fact a man!).
It also holds darker themes, as Viktor close to madness, being taken over by his creation. Brazil (no less!) comes to mind a few times.
Al Pacino's main performance is obviously a stand out, intense and true as usual.
The wonderful photography, with sharp contrasts and colour themes (as with Niccols other 2 movies) help bathe the picture in a very surreal atmosphere, where nothing ever "really" feel real...
From start to finish (up to the last little twist!), this movie rings true in our world, where image rules us all.

A Baby's Perspective on Sleep Training
Specially dedicated to all future and new parents around... :)

OK, here's my situation. My Mummy has had me for almost 7 months. The first few months were great--I cried, she picked me up and fed me, anytime, day or night. Then something happened.
Over the last few weeks, she has been trying to STTN (sleep thru the night). At first, I thought it was just a phase, but it is only getting worse. I've talked to other babies, and it seems like it's pretty common after Mummies have had us for around 6 months.
Here's the thing: these Mummies don't really need to sleep. It's just a habit. Many of them have had some 30 years to sleep--they just don't need it anymore. So I am implementing a plan I call it the Crybaby Shuffle.
It goes like this:
Night 1--cry every 3 hours until you get fed. I know, it's hard. It's hard to see your Mummy upset over your crying. Just keep reminding yourself, it's for her own good.
Night 2--cry every 2 hours until you get fed.
Night 3--every hour.
Most Mummies will start to respond more quickly after about 3 nights. Some Mummies are more alert, and may resist the change longer. These Mummies may stand in your doorway for hours, shhhh-ing. Don't give in. I cannot stress this enough: CONSISTENCY IS KEY!!
If you let her STTN (sleep through the night), just once, she will expect it every night. I KNOW IT'S HARD! But she really does not need the sleep, she is just resisting the change.
If you have an especially alert Mummy, you can stop crying for about 10 minutes, just long enough for her to go back to bed and start to fall asleep. Then cry again. It WILL eventually work. My Mummy once stayed awake for 10 hours straight, so I know she can do it. Last night, I cried every hour. You just have to decide to stick to it and just go for it.
BE CONSISTENT! I cried for any reason I could come up with.
*My sleep sack tickled my foot.
*I felt a wrinkle under the sheet.
*My mobile made a shadow on the wall.
*I burped, and it tasted like pears (I hadn't eaten pears since lunch - what's up with that?)
*The dog said "woof" (I should know. My Mommy reminds me of this about 20 times a day. LOL.)
*Once I cried just because I liked how it sounded when it echoed on the monitor in the other room.
*Too hot, too cold, just right--doesn't matter! Keep crying!!
It took awhile, but it worked. She fed me at 4am. Tomorrow night, my goal is 3:30am.
You need to slowly shorten the interval between feedings in order to reset your Mummies' internal clocks.
P.S. Don't let those rubber things fool you, no matter how long you suck on them, NO milk will come out! Trust me.

Underworld.
I had no expectations on this when I caught it on TV and came out quite happily surprised, so I thought I'd post something about it.
The concept of the war between werewolves and vampires is a good one, with a lot of cool factor attched, but everything I read about Underworld when it came out was that it was nothing really special, so I didn't bother trying to see it.
Anyway now I have I can say that although it's far from perfect, it's not without qualities.
1st and foremost, I enjoyed the story (more elaborate than expected, with a nice twist that changes the pespective on the story) and the background given (the vampire elders, slavery of the lycans, etc).
The movie is also really nice looking, the gothic atmosphere very well rendered and the poses you expect are all there! The actors are not specially good (and haven't heard of any oscars given, so... ;) ), but good looking in the context and therefore appropriate.
Actually 1 standout: Bill Nighy as the @ss-kicking Viktor. One word: Cool. :)
The only let down is really that the action doesn't really delivers. Apart from bits of the final showdown (with Bill Nighy!) it's quite bland, which is a shame really.
Somehow, it's really good looking but not quite so when images are moving. It's far from horrible, but nothing groudbreaking. I think one of the main problem of werewolves movies is to make the werewolves. It's always tricky to make them believable so I guess they couldn't really go all the way in fight scenes, which you could have expected epic, but unfortunately aren't...
But overall it didn't spoilt it for me, so I'll actually try to see the sequel now...

As I understand it, it started with this first video from Sarah Silverman to his boyfriend Jimmy Kimmel (who has a talk show in the states but I don'y know him):
That's quite good already... But wait...
Said Kimmel answered with this:
Bigger budget, better cast... Good answer! :)
Yet there's nothing better than a good trilogy...
So to finish, comes this is "c#mming" right from the latest Kevin Smith shoot (which I'm really looking forward to btw!!!).

Microsoft grammar.
I had a Microsoft update recently and for a while it as been featuring a Malicious Software Removal Tool.
A colleague of mine pointed out an interesting thing: what does the "malicious" adjectives refers to?
If it's to software, then you get a tool that removes malicious software which is good.
Now what if it actually referred to "software removal tool"?
Then you get a malicious tool that removes software. Probably the ones you most use on top of that!
Having observed Windows' behaviour for a number of years now, I think you can honestly ponder which of them is included... ;)

Maximum The Hormone
Musically, Japan has given me a few bands that count as the best things I've ever heard (The Pillows, Judy & Mary, Thee Michelle Gun Elephant not to name a few).
Maximum The Hormone came recommended by a friend that also had me watch the anime Death Note, for which they did the 2nd opening & ending. After being exposed to the latter, I took it to investigate a bit more on them, to find one of the most @ss kicking and original bands I have heard lately.
They manage to happily mix death metal, punk, J-Pop, J-rock.
Hard to believe but true.
3 of this four piece take lead singing in turn and each of their voice give a different colour to their music. The girl (and hard hitting drummer!) takes the pops parts, the "proper" lead singer raps and screech like a needle on a turntable with his high pitched voice, while the lead guitarist and his rockier and low voice takes the rest.
The bassist is too busy making his insane slap lines... (^_^)
All together, they redefine the true meaning of "rocking your socks off".
I have to say that I'm not a huge fan of death metal, yet they always manage to keep it fun always switching from style to style... Really impressive.
A very welcome UMO (Unidentified Musical Object) in a otherwise too peaceful musical horizon...
Rock is not dead after all!

Planet Terror.
Well I would never have thought to prefer a Robert Rodriguez movie over a Tarantino...
But comparing the 2 parts of the Grindhouse project, you have to give it to Robert Rodriguez: he's the one who really embraced the concept of making a movie by the standards of the old gringhouse...
When Tarantino "disguised" one of his movies as a grindhouse one, Rodriguez just did one.
As a consequence, you get a story that doesn't make sense, unidimensionnal characters, defects on the film, a missing reel (at exactly the right time), nonsensic one-liners and all that jazz. But don't get me wrong, it's all this that make all the charm of this movie.
It's all done tongue in cheek, it's all for fun and there's no point refusing to go along.
Because it's all dirt, yes, but it's dirt crafted with a true love of the genre and therefore dirt of the highest quality.
It's a right laugh and it's cool, with a lot of completely crazy concepts and inventive gore.
For example, I could not understand what was the point in replacing a severed leg with a heavy machine gun. Well trust me, after seeing this, I can tell you it IS a cool idea! :)
There's also the fact that the cast is 5 stars (Josh Brolin, Bruce Willis, Michael Biehn...), they all take it very seriously, which adds to the experience.
Rodriguez is right in his element and can pull out his tricks without actually making it feel cheesy (things that could happen in his other movies) because it's supposed to anyway. This might just be for me his best movie yet.
Watch this beer in hands, with a few friends, you're sure to have a good time. :)

Rodriguez is right in his element and can pull out his tricks without actually making it feel cheesy (things that could happen in his other movies) because it's supposed to anyway. This might just be for me his best movie yet.

Sweeney Todd - The demon barber of Fleet street.
I watched this latest Tim Burton movie a few days after seeing his Charlie and the Chocolate Factory again...
I have to say I couldn't have made a stronger contrast.
They basically show the whole range of the spectrum that Burton can do: on one hand an outstanding and intelleigent children movie that can also truly entertain adults (that's Charlie) on the other the darkest revenge movie.
Indeed, don't get fooled by the musical aspect of Sweeney Todd. Although it is a "proper" musical, meaning that at least 3/4 of the dialogs are sung, the song are never here for lifting the atmosphere...
From the 1st frames of the movie, blood rains on London and that 1st gloomy impression is not betrayed by the rest, the horror ramping up as Sweeney plots his revenge.
This is most certainly Burton's darkest movie to date. He has always had a taste for gloom, but most of the time his characters are some sort of romantic misfits. Here, Sweeney Todd is so absorbed by his vengence that he can't even see anything else, he's completely consumed by it. And along goes any kind of so said romantic characters that could be associated with him...
I didn't expect such darkness from Burton. Sure he did Mars Attacks! yet it's a funny movie. To see him come up with something like this when people had suspected him to "soften up" is a very nice surprise indeed!

Engrish.
Once in a while I have a look through my "archive" of funnies that went through my email in the past and rediscover some gems.
Anyone who has been to asian countries (especially Japan I'd say) might know that they sometimes have a "distorted" knowledge of english. In Japan one of the most common example is that they confuse "R" & "L", because they don't have those sounds in Japanese.
That often leads to funny or cryptic messages.

It's very good! :)

No country for old men.
I am a great fan of Terry Pratchett and especially his Discworld novels. ANd in those, one of my favourite characters is Death. It has a kind of sympathetic feel to it. Just "something" doing its job. It has to be here, he doesn't specially enjoys it yet he takes pride in making sure it's done well.
In the Coen brother's latest, the character that will most certainly stay in everyone's mind will be that of Anton Chigurg. And that character could actually be an incarnation of Death itself. With a difference that makes him less engaging. He loves what he does.
Actually I read an interview of Javier Bardem (who plays Chigurg) somewhere and he said that he though his character was more an incarnation of violence. And it does make sense (not that I would doubt that he knows what he's talking about, after all he played the guy... ^^; ).
Violence is everywhere, unstoppable, thorough. That's what he is.
At some point in the movie people question if he's not a ghost. And you hear this stories that could be his doing but are way too old... Was he there? Or is he just doing the same old thing that other did before him?
To the point that later in the movie, you don't even see things, because you just know what happenned anyway. The same old.
You can only witness it or be a victim.
So to get all those point of views ad so we're not left with just that grim character, we also have the witness in the person of the aging sheriff (that has seen it all) and the guy that thinks he can get away with it.
As usual with the Coens (although here they were adapting a book, so they are not the only ones accountable for this), the characters are very well written and very engaging whether main or secondary. They are also played to the standard, with obviously Javier Bardem in a turn I'm not going to forget (as the "ultimate badass"), but also Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin that give him a good opposition (although they never share a scene).
One thing was that the movie is set in Texas and the characters have very strong accents, which pushed my laguage skill to the limit, so I couldn't fully enjoy the dialogs. Obviously, again as usual, they are excellent (from what I managed to understand). But this is only due to my own limitation and should be put to the cedrit of the Coen, that always scrupulously keep their universe coherent.
Along the same lines, the attention to the tinest details in the cinematography was also amazing, the way they manage to suggest things without showing it (the repertition of blood trails, the attention of Chigurg not to put blood on his shoes...).
It all adds up to make a fairly standard and unoriginal pitch still feel fresh.
It's a movie that gets your mind working after you've left the cinema, that you want to discuss... That's how good this is.

I Am Legend
I started 2008 on a big one.
I have heard about this for nearly 2 years now.
In a nutshell: supposedly the book it's adapted from is one of the best "vampire" books of all time (I haven't red it yet). And the adaptation took years and years to be made, the original had the reputation to be the best script ever written. But no one could do it.
And then it finally resurfaced and Will Smith was attached to it, with the director of Constantine directing. That produced quite a stir, with fans fearing that Will Smith would change the main character into a wise-cracking guy.
I had to admit that when the book is supposed to be 1 guy alone going crazy, that could be a problem.
Also, doing a "Hollywood blockbuster" based on that could lead to fabricated action sequences that would spoilthe whole spirit of the novel.
So I took good care not reading the book efore seeeing the movie, to reduce the chances to be disappointed to the minimum.
Well as a movie, just on its own, I have to say it's a pretty damn good effort.
The script also alternates quite nicely drama moments and action sequences that are handled quite well, that gives a nice rythm of tension build up then release then build up... There are plenty of memorable moments and the overall tone stays quite dark.
Having completely CG vampires seem a bizarre idea, yet it didn't really bother me.
More importantly Will Smith is excellent, with a very believable turn on a man alone. I just felt it rang true. He relly carries the film.
Ultimately it's what makes the movie compelling.
Now I have to read the book, to see the (apparently numerous) differences.
Even if it's much better at least I'll have been able to enjoy the adaptation!

A welldone rehash of the Terminator and Robocop movies that makes the 2 unstoppable machines face to face...
Made me think of the short movie Batma: Dead End that confronts Batman with other creatures. That's an actual short though and it does rock... :)

2007 Cinema round up...
This year was fairly quiet one and because I had less time to go to the cinema I just went for biggies.
As a consequence, I saw "only" 11 movies, which kind of defeats the idea of having my yearly "top 10".
Not only that but for various reasons I think that all of them were excellent in their own right. Not much of a mind bending set, mainly only straightforward rides, but still highly enjoyable (that's what cinema is for anyway!) and not necessarily dumb.
If I still tried to order them, it would give:
1) Spider-Man 3
2) Beowulf
3) The Bourne Ultimatum
4) Transformers
5) La Science des rêves
6) Zodiac
7) 30 Days of Night
8) Hot Fuzz
9) 300
10) Shoot 'Em Up
11) Death Proof
This year holds a lot of promises, with the Coen brothers returning, as well as Tim Burton... Exciting!

Je voudrais remercier tout ceux qui m'ont envoyé des e-mails en
chaînes pendant toute cette année, car grâce à votre bonté:
1-J'ai lu 170 fois que MSN Hotmail allait supprimer mon compte
2 - J'ai accumulé environ 3000 ans de malheur et je suis mort 67 fois
à cause de toutes les chaînes que je n'ai pas renvoyées!
3-Quand je sors d'IKEA, je ne regarde personne, car j'ai peur qu'il
(ou elle) m'emmène dans un hotel, qu'il (ou elle) me drogue, pour
après m'enlever un rein pour le revendre au marché noir!
4- J'ai versé aussi toutes mes économies sur le compte d'Amy BRUCE,
une pauvre petite fille qui était malade à l'hôpital plus de 7 000
fois (c'est drôle, cette petite fille a toujours 8 ans depuis 1995...)
5-Mon GSM Nokia gratuit n'est jamais arrivé, ni les entrées que j'avais gagnées
6-J'ai inscrit mon prénom parmi 3000 autres sur une pétition et j'ai
peut-être sauvé une espèce menacée d'écureuil nain à poil dur en
Biélorussie orientale .
7-Je connais la recette pour ne plus être seul en amour: il suffit
d'écrire le prénom d'une personne sur un papier en pensant très fort à
elle puis de se gratter le cul en tournant dans le sens des aiguilles
d'une montre autour d'une Renault 4L (pas facile de trouver une 4L)
8-J'ai lu au moins 25 tomes de tous les préceptes du DALAI LAMA et
j'ai accumulé du bonheur pour au moins les 4690 prochaines années!!
9 -Sans oublier les 50 fois ou j'ai dû scruter mon écran nuit et jour
pour détecter le fameux message qui contenait cet enfoiré de virus que
même Microsoft, Mac affee, Norton Symantec etc étaient incapables
d'avoir l'anti dote....et qui, non content de bousiller le disque dur,
risquait de flinguer la chaîne stéréo, la télé, la cafetière.le sani
broyeur !!!!!!

secondes à au moins 8500 personnes, un dinosaure venu de l'espace
viendra bouffer toute ta famille demain à 17h 30

Geeeeeeeks!
Suite a la sortie un docu sur le sujet, Rue89 traite des geeks.
Cela ne peut que me toucher puisque j'en fais partie, quoique de maniere relativement benigne. En effet le passage d'un test (ici) ne me donne qu'un score de 1378, faisant de moi un geek honnete sans exces.
Mais bon je dois dire que ce test fait pas mal d'impasses jeux videos et anime / manga, ca aurait fait monter mon score.
Le test d'Otaku suivant me donne en effet en otaku.
C'est tres subjectif tout ca...
Et pour relier avec mon post sur les zombies, voici comment le monde sera sauve (ou pas).

Beowulf.
At a 1st glance this didn't seem really promising: the technology used for the Polar Express (which was a so-so Christmas tale, so kids only, and with fish eyed characters) was going to be used again to tell a story I had only heard of in a crappy film starring Christophe Lambert...
But that story was adapted by Roger Avary & Neil Gaiman, which is a 1st good sign.
Also, I read a few things in which director Robert Zemeckis was stating he wanted to do something more adult to follow up on the Polar Express.
A good script and good intentions are always nice things, but don't always give a good movie.
What of this?
Well it's fine example of a very succesfull epic!
Technically, it's stunning. The technique consists in digitalising the actor's performances and then recreating everything from scratch in CGI.
It therefore frees the camera (which is then virtual) completely and make possible the wildest movements.
It also enables a lot of liberties on the characters, as you can see with Beowulf, a young buffed up colossus that is originally played by Ray Winston, a 50-something actor.
The textures are amazing (especially skins and hairs) and the characters movements also, which is no real surprise as they're "real".
There are still a few things that feel strange (the horses in particular).
Having said that, and eventhough the point is more or less "photorealism", I don't think the point here is to recreate "real" in CGI.
It's just a hybrid between animation and live action. It's an animation movie, but instead of having only voice acting it also captures physical acting.
So as such it's neither, it's just another way to make pictures, to tell stories.
And that's actually there that Beowulf is, in my opinion, the most succesfull: the story is truly engaging.
It obviously treads on 300 ground, being a sort of bedtime story, the kind that gets bigger each time it's told (you actually get a nod to this at the beginning of the picture). It's firmly centered around its main character, but whereas in 300 couldn't really identify with the main characters (unless you're a wild warmonger), Beowulf is a very human character, despite being a hero.
He's faillible and his pride will lead him to his fall, but ultimately his redemption.
All this takes place in a pure medieval fantasy setting, meaning brutal fights and epic set pieces, magnified by the possibilities of the virtual camera.
So not only this is a technology leap, it's also an emotionnal journey doubled with an amazing ride...

J'en profite pour passer un autre article de Libe sur l'utilisation du telephone portable dans les pays en voie de developpement: maintenant que les portables sont aussi puissants que les ordinateurs d'il y a 10ans, avec en plus la connectivite sans fil, c'est un outil inestimable pour le developpement des pays pauvres!
Ca fait du bien d'entendre de bonnes nouvelles de temps en temps...
On oubliera peut-etre la pub, mais la pub, elle, ne nous oubliera pas...

C'est tres tres informatif et didactique, avec des videos d'information et meme une simulation en cas d'epidemie!

30 Days Of Night.
The pitch of this one was what caught my eye: an American town in Alaska gets each year 30 days during which the sun doesn't show up (as often happens in those northern lands) and that's the time that a bunch of vampires choose to go downtown and enjoy themselves a bit...
Now vampires movies are cool already, but when properly handed, you can reach some pretty awesome levels. That material was properly treated.
In essence, it's pure 1st degree no-nonsense survival movie. A bunch of mismatched people are being hunted and they try to survive, as they see everyone else being killed.
In that sense the movie doesn't sport anything very ground breaking in the sense that you get the usual freak outs and surprise kills. Nothing madly original in concept but no disappointment as it's still very solid stuff.
And anyway with this genre, what matters is how the material is dealt with. It's all about style and atmosphere and it's truly here that the movie delivers.
First of all the vampires are really scary. They're beasts, only looking for humans to feed and despising them as mere cattle. Danny Huston who plays their leader is truly creepy here.
The tension starts building up straightaway and never let go, even during the ending credits, a sort of patchwork of torn pictures reminding of the massacre. You only get a few jump shocks to keep you on your toes and the movie concentrates on distilling a creepy atmosphere that does the job as well!
It is also beautifully shot. It might be a strange thing to say about a horror movie, especially considering the amount of violence and the number of shock moments, but it is! Each frame manages to convey the creepy atmosphere and also to remind of the comic book source. It's not as stylised as Sin City but still plays on a tasteful palette of black, white and red.
Overall what we have is one of the best survival horrors in years, coupled with one of best vampires movies in years!

Deathproof.
I've just realised I hadn't posted this, what a shame!
Last september, I was lucky enough to catch a preview of the latest Tarantino movie, followed by a very interesting and entertaining Q&A with Tarantino himself along with Zoe Bell (which I had never heard of before... ^^; ).
That was the actual cut of the movie, not the Grindhouse cut, so compared to the latter it was 30min longer.
It would be difficult for me to descibe this something else than "pure fun".
You know it's one of those movies that has no depth (other than style-wise) but that is however is purely enjoyable and deeply satisfying.
As usual, Mr QT starts on a fairly simple basis of trying to recreate a genre-film (here a slasher movie) but delivers something that is a lot more than that, that feels fresh and ultimately personnal and unique.
You always go to see a QT movie expecting something and come out having seen more. Also, you don't really have to "get" the references in order to enjoy the film...
So it's starts off as the usual chatty Tarantino flick, then turns into a slasher (kind of) and then becomes a car chase movie. In the intervals, you get to know the characters better, a gruesome car accident and a cool lap dance... It's amazing to see how he can fill empty space with just "random" dialogues without actually be boring. He makes the simplest girly chitchat almost as exciting as the ation bits...
As usual, it's perfectly cast, the obvious highlight being Kurt Russel masterfully portraying a twisted character that reveals to be surprisingly multilayered.
The soundtrack, unsurprisingly, is also top notch.
It's a movie you have to give in to. It's gripping and thrilling and you also get some tongue in cheek "defects" as if it was an "actual" grindhouse movie, whih add to the fun.
Maybe a "minor" Tarantino (then again you could argue he only makes "minor" movies) but he can make more like that as much as he likes, I won't complain!

Bottle Rocket.
It was such a long time since I didn't take the time to watch a movie!
Man that's good! :)
I had planned to watch Dune (which I have never seen) tonight but I saw that was on TV, so I had to watch it as I've been wanting to see it for a while now.
This is Wes Anderson's first movie and I'm quite a big Wes Anderson fan, from Rushmore to Life Aquatic.
So what else to say that this is definitely a Wes Anderson movie. In a sense he always makes the same movie. Or more to the point, if the stories and environments are always different, the characters are similar. They are lost. And dysfunctionnal.
The good thing about this is that he always creates interesting characters.
They're tragic and funny.
They can behave like gits, but you still can't help to sympathise...
Here, the context is that of a capper movie. But it's obviously no Heat. They're small time and not really good at it. So you follow them from failure to failure...
It's smart, funny, subtle, off-beat, touching.
It's beautifully shot (especially taking into account that it most likely was shot on a shoestring budget) and the cast is excellent, with Luke & Owen Wilson as the leads.
As a 1st movie, it's quite amazing how already it established Anderson's style with such confidence...

Article de Libe...
Un article de Libe tres interessant sur le "nouveau parle" en politique:
Linguiste, Pierre Encrevé a été conseiller auprès de Michel Rocard lorsque celui-ci était Premier ministre. Il décrypte les nouveaux mots du pouvoir.
Nicolas Sarkozy est-il en train de changer le niveau de l’expression politique ?
Un peu. Comme les vêtements. Il a jeté le costume gaullo-mitterrandien aux orties, la langue avec. Vous imaginez l’un quelconque de ses prédécesseurs courant dans les rues en culotte courte rehaussée d’un tee-shirt à l’enseigne de la police new-yorkaise ? Son langage public improvisé est à l’avenant : celui de n’importe quel membre de sa classe sociale et de sa génération qui n’est pas passé par les grandes écoles. Il méprise l’usage de la particule négative («C’est pas comme ça que ça marche !»), il ignore le parler énarque, mais emprunte à Coluche le tutoiement collectif («Attends !»), il emploie le vocabulaire quotidien. Bref, il use d’une variété souple et non guindée de la langue française et, négligeant de mettre les formes, il préfère jouer de la spontanéité, du naturel, du relâché, qui caractérisent depuis longtemps le parler public du show-biz, par exemple dans les talk-show. On n’est pas loin du langage de Bush fils, mais on peut aussi le rapprocher, mutatis mutandis, de Georges Marchais, dont le populisme ne lui est pas vraiment étranger.
Est-ce que cela marque une inflexion dans la pratique du pouvoir ?
La Constitution ne précise pas de quelle variété de la langue française doit user le Président. Dans ses discours écrits, Nicolas Sarkozy n’innove guère. Mais en discours spontané public, il brise la convention de la monarchie républicaine qui voulait que le Président s’exprime avec une distance le distinguant constamment du vulgaire. En public, même dans les occasions apparemment détendues, ses prédécesseurs n’utilisaient que le style surveillé. Nicolas Sarkozy, lui, semble négliger la dimension symbolique de l’exercice du pouvoir suprême, se consacrant avec frénésie à illustrer ses aspects réels et imaginaires : il paraît exercer tous les rôles gouvernementaux, il parle beaucoup et se montre sans cesse, mais tout ce qui dans la représentation de l’Etat tient à l’éloignement, à la hauteur, au laconisme est, pour l’instant, laissé pour compte. C’est apparemment un choix calculé, et c’est une vraie rupture avec la Ve République qui, pour le style, pourrait nous rapprocher de la IVe avec ses Conseils des ministres en bras de chemise et le tutoiement de rigueur - sauf qu’il n’y a plus de ministres.

Imaginez que Rachida Dati en sortant d’une visite de prison, l’autre jour, ait dit «C’est dégueulasse !» et que Fadela Amara, elle, ait dit des tests ADN qu’ «ils ne font pas honneur à la France» : le gouvernement serait en danger ! Avant sa visite aux prisons Rachida Dati partageait les vacances américaines du Président, et après les prisons elle a dû visiter les défilés de haute couture : elle représente le rêve d’intégration à la française. Elle doit donc parler la langue des politiques issus de la bourgeoisie, auxquels elle doit tendre constamment à ressembler en tout. Fadela Amara tient, dans l’excellent casting des spécialistes élyséens, le rôle symétriquement opposé : elle doit représenter la banlieue pour tenter de la réconcilier avec le Président, en délicatesse avec elle pour cause de «Kärcher» et «racaille». Elle doit donc avant tout conserver des marques apparentes de sa différence originaire avec les «bourges» qu’elle côtoie au gouvernement. Le mot «dégueulasse» n’appartient pas spécifiquement à la banlieue mais aussi bien au français familier de chacun de nous, et bien des politiques l’emploient publiquement à l’occasion, en l’accompagnant d’un «passez-moi l’expression», qui dans la bouche de Fadela Amara aurait bien déçu le Président. C’est une autre affaire. Je suis moins sûr que le Président lui sache gré, après avoir réussi à le fâcher avec toute l’Afrique, d’insulter un intellectuel à qui il aurait volontiers confié un ministère. «Petit con», l’injure sexiste (ne l’oublions pas !) la plus courante de la langue française, c’est très classique quand on est à court d’argument. Si Guaino était ministre, il y aurait un problème politique, mais venant d’un simple conseiller, fût-il spécial, ça n’est pas significatif.

Si Guaino était ministre, il y aurait un problème politique, mais venant d’un simple conseiller, fût-il spécial, ça n’est pas significatif.

Un sondage dit que les francais veulent un retour de la discipline a l'ecole...
C'est etrange mais ca me fait rire...
Par exemple: "78 % que le téléphone portable soit interdit pour les élèves dans les établissements scolaires" => c'est pas les parents leur laissent prendre le portable avant d'aller a l'ecole?
Si les parents enseignent pas le respect, comment peut-on attendre des eleves qu'ils respectent un etranger (le prof)?
Mais bon c'est pratique de se defosser...

Pendant ce temps, en France...
On vote des lois.
On propose une depenalisation du droit des affaires. C'est vrai que c'est horrible que des gens qui detournent des fonds de grands entreprises doivent aller en prison. Ils ont souvent besoin des millions qu'ils volent.
Ce sont les memes qui demandent des facilites pour licencier leurs employes. C'est vrai que c'est injuste qu'une entreprise soit responsable de ses employes.
On va de plus vers des remises de peines non systematiques. A la limite on pourrait comprendre ca, mais faut voir aussi a qui ca profite... Les voleurs de voitures recidivistes qui se prennent une peine plancher, peut-etre?
La dessus, on veut refuser des soins d'urgence aux sans papiers.
Et pour couronner le tout, la moitier des francais est pour les tests ADN pour les immigres candidats au regroupement familial...

Apparemment Hasbro a lance un vote pour elire des noms de ville qui figureront dans une nouvelle version "francaise" du Monopoly.
Des joyeux drilles ont decide de pousser Montcuq le plus loin possible pour qu'elle occupe la place de la celebre rue de la Paix de l'edition originale, place reservee a la ville qui aura le plus de votes (lien d'origine a consulter ici).
Une idee pareille ne merite rien d'autre qu'a etre soutenue jusqu'au bout.

Diplomes. Plom!
On m'a envoye ce texte, extrait d´une conférence prononcée en 1935 par
Paul Valéry et consacrée à l´enseignement.
En cette periode de rentree et de debats sur l'ecole, je pense que tous se devraient de lire et mediter ce qui suit, fustigeant les fondements meme de notre mentalite en termes d'education.
D'un point de vue personnel, me souvenant de mes annees scolaires et de ma recherche d'emploi, je ne peux qu'en approuver le contenu (pour ce que ca vaut)...
"Les préoccupations dominantes semblent être de donner aux enfants une
culture disputée entre la tradition dite classique, et le désir
naturel de les initier à l´énorme développement des connaissances et
de l´activité modernes. Tantôt une tendance l´emporte, tantôt l´autre
; mais jamais, parmi tant d´arguments, jamais ne se produit la
question essentielle : - Que veut-on et que faut-il vouloir ?
C´est qu´elle implique une décision, un parti à prendre. Il s´agit de
se représenter l´homme de notre temps, et cette idée de l´homme dans
le milieu probable où il vivra doit d´abord être établie. Elle doit
résulter de l´observation précise, et non du sentiment et des
préférences des uns et des autres - de leurs espoirs politiques,
notamment. Rien de plus coupable, de plus pernicieux et de plus
décevant que la politique de parti en matière d´enseignement. Il est
cependant un point où tout le monde s´entend, s´accorde
déplorablement. Disons-le : l´enseignement a pour objectif réel le
diplôme.
Je n´hésite jamais à le déclarer, le diplôme est l´ennemi mortel de la
culture. Plus les diplômes ont pris d´importance dans la vie (et cette
importance n´a fait que croître à cause des circonstances économiques)
, plus le rendement de l´enseignement a été faible. Plus le contrôle
s´est exercé, s´est multiplié, plus les résultats ont été mauvais.
Mauvais par ses effets sur l´esprit public et sur l´esprit tout court.
Mauvais parce qu´il crée des espoirs, des illusions de droits acquis.
Mauvais par tous les stratagèmes et les subterfuges qu´il suggère, les
recommandations, les préparations stratégiques, et, en somme, l´emploi
de tous expédients pour franchir le seuil redoutable. C´est là, il
faut l´avouer, une détestable initiation à la vie intellectuelle et
civique.
D´ailleurs si je me fonde sur la seule expérience et si je regarde les
effets du contrôle en général, je constate que le contrôle, en toute
matière, aboutit à vicier l´action, à la pervertir ... Je vous l´ai
déjà dit : dès qu´une action est soumise à un contrôle, le but profond
de celui qui agit n´est plus l´action même, mais il conçoit d´abord la
prévision du contrôle, la mise en échec des moyens de contrôle. Le
contrôle des études n´est qu´un cas particulier et une démonstration
éclatante de cette observation générale.Le diplôme fondamental, chez
nous, c´est le baccalauréat. Il a conduit à orienter les études sur un
programme strictement défini et en considération d´épreuves qui, avant
tout, représentent, pour les examinateurs, les professeurs et les
patients, une perte totale, radicale et non compensée, de temps et de
travail. Du jour où vous créez un diplôme , un contrôle bien défini,
vous voyez aussitôt s´organiser en regard tout un dispositif non moins
précis que votre programme, qui a pour but unique de conquérir ce
diplôme par tous moyens. Le but de l´enseignement n´étant plus la
formation de l´esprit, mais l´acquisition du diplôme, c´est le minimum
exigible qui devient l´objet des études. Il ne s´agit plus d´apprendre

The Bourne Ultimatum
I wasn't really expecting this one, although I enjoyed the 1st 2 very much, but I got lured into the cinema for this one as I saw raving reviews.
If it was that good, it should be worth seing it on the big screen.
Well I have to say the movie doesn't disappoint.
You might say that it's "just a thriller"... But it's as good a thriller can get.
A great cast and direction make up for a gripping rollercoaster.
When you think about it, the story is pretty standard (don't get me wrong it's still good with a few good twists and turns but there's no real revelations) but the thing is that the movie doesn't let you think!
It just doesn't stop.
And it's got a lot to do with the handheld camera used throughout, sort of "documentary" style, that always keeps your nose on the action so you can't breathe.
By the way I was well impressed that this (volontary) messy way of filming manages to be clear, so you always understand where you are in the chaos around you...
You go to the movies and you get to see a lot of action and you finish by being a bit jaded by it all. But here I found myself being surprised at how good it was every step of the way, whether it's a game of cat and mouse in Waterloo station (jaw dropping!) or a gritty fist fight in Morocco or a humongous car crash in New York...
It's always very rough, down and dirty so you always feel involved.
Very impressive.
The cast is also quie a standout, Damon first with his Bourne character that manages to be indestructible yet faillible and tortured.
I was happy to see a number of actors I really like, such as Paddy Considine (see Hot Fuzz, but more importantly Dead Man's Shoes) or Edgar Ramirez (I so love Domino!).
So with Spidey, a 3rd episode that was wll worth doing!

An American graduate has created a way to track down who anonymously changed contents in Wikipedia and found some quite interesting data...
Like corporations or even government agencies removing too critical material against them...
I think the community aspect on Wikipedia is excellent and make it possible, through collaboration and refining of the information, to have some truly objective articles.
If now we can even spot actual misinformation, it's near perfect!

Optical illlusions.
My "hightech" post pushed me to investigate optical illusions, which are always fun.
So I found a few here with some very interesting sites full of them.
Do you see a fish or a girl here?
(For some reason I saw the girl 1st)
This one is totally weird (try to fix it a blink):
Another one that tends to make people puke...
To see this one, you need to close 1 eye and look at the cross... You should see a green spot appear and then the purple spots will disappear!

Bien sûr, on peut souligner l'intérêt de la reprise de relations diplomatiques et commerciales avec le gouvernement de Mouammar Kadhafi. On aurait même souhaité que cette évolution contribue à pacifier la situation au Proche-Orient.
Cependant, le trouble est réel. Le 31 juillet, Bernard Kouchner, chargé - théoriquement au moins - de la conduite de la politique étrangère de la France, était auditionné par la commission de l'Assemblée nationale. Nous espérions qu'à cette occasion des clarifications seraient données, en particulier sur le très discutable"mémorandum d'entente sur la coopération dans le domaine des applications pacifiques de l'énergie nucléaire".
Mais, après les explications pour le moins embrouillées du chef de la diplomatie, le trouble persiste. L'inquiétude grandit encore avec les déclarations de Saïf Al-Islam Kadhafi, fils du colonel, qui précise que le "coeur du sujet" entre Paris et Tripoli n'est pas ce projet nucléaire, mais une affaire "militaire" évoquant même ventes d'armes et usine d'armement. Il est inacceptable que le ministre des affaires étrangères ait omis d'informer les parlementaires de cette composante, pour le moins inquiétante, des termes de l'accord qui a accéléré la libération des otages du régime Kadhafi.
Nous ne pouvons accepter, que pour assurer un nouveau "coup d'éclat médiatique" du président Sarkozy, le gouvernement français propose à la Libye de Kadhafi une nouvelle aventure nucléaire. Ce choix est géopolitiquement irresponsable et énergétiquement inutile. Le gouvernement a oublié que les expériences de coopération nucléaire dite "civile" se sont, jusqu'à maintenant et dans leur majorité, terminées, soit par la mise au point de l'arme atomique par les bénéficiaires de ces coopérations (Inde, Pakistan), soit par des crises diplomatiques majeures (Iran, Corée du Nord), soit par la guerre (Irak).
Au moment où la tension au Proche-Orient atteint de nouveaux paroxysmes, le renforcement de l'équipement militaire de la Libye et la menace du développement de l'arme atomique chez un des partenaires du monde arabe ne fera qu'aggraver ces tensions. Les efforts des pays du Golfe qui, à la fin de l'année 2005, s'engageaient pour promouvoir une région libre de toute menace nucléaire sont, de facto, anéantis.
Comme le sont les initiatives de la société civile et de certains diplomates courageux qui tentent de convaincre Israël de renoncer à l'arme atomique. Ce mémorandum est d'autant plus iconoclaste que nul ne peut ignorer qu'il a fallu plus de dix ans pour obtenir du colonel Kadhafi qu'il abandonne ses projets de développement d'armes non conventionnelles et qu'il cesse de soutenir les activités terroristes qui ont coûté la vie à de trop nombreux civils, notamment français...
Nicolas Sarkozy nous dit que l'on ne peut refuser aux pays du sud de la Méditerranée une technologie dont ils auraient besoin. Mais chacun sait que certaines technologies sont plus sensibles et plus dangereuses que d'autres. La question n'est pas de priver la Libye d'énergie ou d'eau potable. Une coopération responsable devrait, en aidant ce pays à couvrir ses besoins, écarter le risque d'un nouveau dérapage militaire et nucléaire qui handicapera les efforts de paix, si nécessaires dans cette région du monde.
La finalité de cette coopération est d'autant plus discutable que l'argument énergétique avancé est totalement inepte. La Libye, à l'inverse de certains pays de la région, n'a pas particulièrement besoin d'usines de dessalement. Le pays pompe depuis toujours dans une nappe phréatique profonde, qui suffira largement à couvrir ses besoins si les autorités en assurent une gestion rigoureuse. Le recours au dessalement d'eau de mer, s'il devient nécessaire, ne le sera qu'en complément très accessoire de la ressource actuellement exploitée. Il n'y a donc sur ce sujet aucune urgence.
Par ailleurs, l'utilisation d'eau de mer, ressource abondante et gratuite, nécessite de l'énergie... et la Libye n'en manque pas. Elle est riche en pétrole et en gaz. Il est vrai cependant qu'il faut limiter la consommation de ces combustibles fossiles pour lutter contre le changement climatique. La recherche d'alternative est donc louable, si tant est qu'elle permet de répondre à des besoins réels et non supposés.
On estime qu'il faut 4 kWh d'électricité pour produire 1 m3 d'eau douce. Avec une population de 5,5 millions d'habitants, la Libye aurait donc besoin d'environ 1 million de MWh d'électricité par an pour couvrir la totalité de ses besoins en eau douce si ces besoins étaient assurés à 100 % par une usine de dessalement... Cette quantité d'électricité représente moins de 10 % de la production permise par une centrale nucléaire de type EPR que la France s'efforce de vouloir exporter à n'importe quel prix.
Ce fameux "mémorandum d'entente" veut donc répondre à un besoin quasi inexistant avec une solution totalement inappropriée ! A qui profite vraiment ce marché de dupes ? D'autant que la Libye, comme tous les pays de la région, possède une autre ressource énergétique illimitée, renouvelable et gratuite : le soleil ! Il serait bien plus prometteur, dans le cadre d'un accord de partenariat scientifique et technique, de développer des unités de dessalement en valorisant l'énergie solaire suivant les technologies déjà mises au point en Israël et en Espagne. Une seule de ces centrales permettrait de fournir l'eau potable pour toute la population libyenne.
L'industrialisation de cette technologie serait une chance pour la Libye, sécurisant ainsi ses besoins, pour la France, développant ce savoir-faire, et pour le reste du monde, bénéficiant ainsi d'une technologie renouvelable très prometteuse... Car, en dépit des déclarations de Claude Guéant (les participants au Grenelle de l'environnement apprécieront), le nucléaire n'est pas une énergie renouvelable... Et force est de constater qu'il est à peu près certain que l'on ne fera pas la guerre pour contrôler le soleil !
Il serait grand temps que la diplomatie française, qui devrait avant toute chose être au service de la paix et du développement durable, prenne le dessus sur le spectacle.

A l'automne 2006, peu après mon retour du Nigeria, je fus interpellé par une blonde et guillerette étudiante dont les yeux bleus paraissaient assortis aux perles du bracelet "africain" qu'elle portait au poignet. "Sauvez le Darfour !", criait-elle derrière une table couverte de brochures exhortant les étudiants à "agir tout de suite !", à "arrêter le génocide au Darfour !". Mon aversion à l'égard de ces étudiants qui s'impliquent à corps perdu dans des causes à la mode faillit me faire tourner les talons, mais le cri qu'elle jeta ensuite m'immobilisa.
"Vous ne voulez donc pas nous aider à sauver l'Afrique ?", hurla-t-elle. Il semblerait que depuis quelque temps, rongé de culpabilité par la crise humanitaire qu'il a provoquée au Moyen-Orient, l'Occident se tourne vers l'Afrique pour y chercher la rédemption. Des étudiants idéalistes, des célébrités comme Bob Geldof et des politiciens comme Tony Blair se sont fixé pour mission d'apporter la lumière au continent noir. Ils arrivent en avion pour effectuer un internat ou participer à une mission d'enquête, ou encore pour adopter un enfant, un peu comme mes amis et moi, à New York, prenons le métro pour aller adopter un chien abandonné à la fourrière.
C'est la nouvelle image que veut se donner l'Occident : une génération sexy et politiquement active dont la méthode préférée pour faire passer son message est de publier de pleines pages de magazines avec des célébrités au premier plan et de pauvres Africains déshérités derrière. Et tant pis si bien souvent les stars dépêchées pour secourir les indigènes ont un air délibérément aussi émacié que ceux qu'elles veulent aider.
Mais ce qui est peut-être plus intéressant encore, c'est le langage employé pour décrire l'Afrique que l'on entend sauver. Par exemple, la campagne lancée par l'association Save the Children, intitulée "I am African", présente des portraits de célébrités occidentales majoritairement blanches avec des "marques tribales" peintes sur le visage au-dessus du slogan I am African imprimé en grosses capitales. Dessous, en lettres plus petites, apparaît la phrase : "Aidez-nous à arrêter l'hécatombe."
Même bien intentionnées, ces campagnes propagent le stéréotype d'une Afrique qui serait un trou noir de maladie et de mort. Articles et reportages ne cessent d'évoquer les dirigeants africains corrompus, les seigneurs de guerre, les conflits "tribaux", les enfants exploités, les femmes maltraitées et victimes de mutilation génitale. Ces descriptions apparaissent sous des titres tels que "Bono peut-il sauver l'Afrique ?" ou "Les Brangelina parviendront-ils à sauver l'Afrique ?" La relation entre l'Afrique et l'Occident n'est plus fondée sur des préjugés ouvertement racistes, mais de tels articles rappellent les beaux jours du colonialisme européen, quand on envoyait des missionnaires en Afrique pour nous apporter l'éducation, Jésus-Christ et la "civilisation".
Tout Africain, moi compris, ne peut que se réjouir de l'aide que nous apporte le monde, mais cela ne nous empêche pas de nous demander si cette aide est vraiment sincère ou si elle est faite dans l'idée d'affirmer sa supériorité culturelle. Je ressens toujours un certain malaise lorsque, dans une soirée caritative, l'organisateur récite une litanie de désastres africains avant de faire monter sur scène une personne (généralement) riche et blanche qui s'empresse d'exposer ce qu'il ou elle a fait pour les pauvres Africains affamés.
Chaque fois qu'une étudiante pourtant sincère évoque les villageois qui ont dansé pour la remercier de son aide, je fais la grimace. Chaque fois qu'un réalisateur hollywoodien tourne un film sur l'Afrique dont le héros est occidental, je secoue la tête - parce que les Africains, alors que nous sommes des personnes bien réelles, ne font que servir de faire-valoir à l'image fantasmée qu'a l'Occident de lui-même. Et non seulement de telles descriptions ont tendance à ignorer le rôle parfois essentiel qu'a joué l'Occident dans la genèse de nombreuses situations déplorables dont souffre le continent, mais elles ignorent également le travail incroyable qu'ont accompli et que continuent à accomplir les Africains eux-mêmes pour résoudre ces problèmes.
Pourquoi les médias persistent-ils à dire que les pays africains se sont vu "accorder l'indépendance par leurs anciens maîtres coloniaux", et non qu'ils ont combattu et versé leur sang pour obtenir leur liberté ? Pourquoi Angelina Jolie et Bono bénéficient-ils de toute l'attention médiatique pour leur travail en Afrique alors que Nwankwo Kanu ou Dikembe Mutombo, tous deux africains, ne sont pratiquement jamais mentionnés ? Comment se fait-il que l'on s'intéresse plus aux bouffonneries de cow-boy auxquelles se livre un ancien diplomate américain de second rang au Soudan qu'aux nombreux pays africains qui y ont envoyé troupes et vivres et ont consacré d'interminables heures à négocier un règlement entre toutes les parties impliquées dans cette crise ?
Il y a deux ans, j'ai travaillé dans un camp de personnes déplacées au Nigeria, les survivants d'un soulèvement qui avait entraîné la mort de 1 000 personnes et le déplacement de 200 000 autres. Fidèles à leur habitude, les médias occidentaux parlèrent longuement des violences, mais pas du travail humanitaire que les autorités locales et nationales accomplirent - avec très peu d'aide internationale - en faveur des survivants. Des travailleurs sociaux ont consacré leur temps et, dans de nombreux cas, donné leur propre salaire afin de venir en aide à leurs compatriotes. Ce sont eux qui sauvent l'Afrique, et, de même que pour beaucoup d'autres à travers le continent, leur travail ne trouve aucun crédit à l'extérieur.
Le mois dernier, le groupe des huit pays les plus industrialisés s'est réuni en Allemagne avec une brochette de célébrités afin de discuter, entre autres sujets, de la façon de sauver l'Afrique. J'espère qu'avant le prochain sommet du G8 le monde aura enfin compris que l'Afrique ne veut pas être sauvée. L'Afrique veut que le monde reconnaisse qu'au travers de partenariats équitables avec d'autres membres de la communauté internationale elle sera elle-même capable d'une croissance sans précédent.

Bien sûr, on peut souligner l'intérêt de la reprise de relations diplomatiques et commerciales avec le gouvernement de Mouammar Kadhafi. On aurait même souhaité que cette évolution contribue à pacifier la situation au Proche-Orient.
Cependant, le trouble est réel. Le 31 juillet, Bernard Kouchner, chargé - théoriquement au moins - de la conduite de la politique étrangère de la France, était auditionné par la commission de l'Assemblée nationale. Nous espérions qu'à cette occasion des clarifications seraient données, en particulier sur le très discutable"mémorandum d'entente sur la coopération dans le domaine des applications pacifiques de l'énergie nucléaire".
Mais, après les explications pour le moins embrouillées du chef de la diplomatie, le trouble persiste. L'inquiétude grandit encore avec les déclarations de Saïf Al-Islam Kadhafi, fils du colonel, qui précise que le "coeur du sujet" entre Paris et Tripoli n'est pas ce projet nucléaire, mais une affaire "militaire" évoquant même ventes d'armes et usine d'armement. Il est inacceptable que le ministre des affaires étrangères ait omis d'informer les parlementaires de cette composante, pour le moins inquiétante, des termes de l'accord qui a accéléré la libération des otages du régime Kadhafi.
Nous ne pouvons accepter, que pour assurer un nouveau "coup d'éclat médiatique" du président Sarkozy, le gouvernement français propose à la Libye de Kadhafi une nouvelle aventure nucléaire. Ce choix est géopolitiquement irresponsable et énergétiquement inutile. Le gouvernement a oublié que les expériences de coopération nucléaire dite "civile" se sont, jusqu'à maintenant et dans leur majorité, terminées, soit par la mise au point de l'arme atomique par les bénéficiaires de ces coopérations (Inde, Pakistan), soit par des crises diplomatiques majeures (Iran, Corée du Nord), soit par la guerre (Irak).

Brick
Here's a movie that somehow gets an old receipe, mix it a new pot and end up feeling almost new!
The story and characters are that of a pure "noir" movie. So you get the typical characters (the femme fatales, the mob boss, the henchmen, the tough (but not invincible) hero...), but it's all set up in an high school environment.
It's practically a masterclass on how a good "noir" should be made.
The story gives you plenty of twists and turns and the characters are very well written.
It's all supported by an excellent cast of unknowns (you can recognise faces from Lost or Heroes). The lead stays the higlight: Joseph Gordon-Levitt impersonates here one of the coolest characters I've seen on screen for a long time, hard-hitting yet vulerable.
The movie is also beautifully shot and maintains an excellent atmosphere throughout, strange and eerie, perfectly in synch with the corrupted world it describes.
An excellent movie, for a 1st, it's really impressive, I'll make sure I'll check out Rian Johnson's movies in the future.

Bon alors j'attends avec impatience l'adaptation de Puissance 4...

Transformers
Time for a belated review, I saw the movie at the end of July but didn't come round to actually write anything before now.
Here it goes.
Summer blockbuster could be considered as a genre in itself.
Like most genres, it has its rules.
It has to be fun. It has to blow a lot of stuff up. The plot shouldn't make any sense (it makes it funnier).
Like other in genres you got good summer movies and bad summer movies. And sometimes, when a good director gets down to it, the genre can be transcended to make something more.
I mean, that's just cinema.
Anyway if anyone is to be the king of summer movies, that person has to be Michael Bay.
I have to say that I am a late admirer of the guy and I admit that I still don't buy into his "early" stuff. I saw the end of The Rock (admittedly 1 of his best films) the other day and let's say that it was a lot worse than I remebered it.
Yet the insanely dumb fun of Bad Boys 2 was too much for me not to enjoy and I thought The Island was a solid (although maybe a bit unoriginal) Sci-Fi movie. I liked it, that's all that counts for me.
Anyway whether you like his movies or not I think you have to give him that: he KNOWS how "to make that shit look good"... I mean the guy could probably film a guy with diarrhoea desperately trying to reach the toilets and make it the most badass thing you've ever seen... Filters and yellow light and all.
All that to say that although I had no expectations of a Transformers movie (yet another stupid adaptation coming out of the current Hollywood frenzy to adapt anything they can find), when I heard that Bay was involved I couldn't help but think that maybe that could be an interesting thing. Why not?
So what's the verdict then?
Well Transformers delivered for me on everything I was expecting and then some.
Story: don't care. The stupidest the better here.
My biggest surprise was on how succesful the comedy aspects of the movie came out.
It's actually funny!
It probably has a lot to do with the leading man (Shai LaBeouf, whom I had never seen on screen so far). He can deliver some seriously corny lines without you actually noticing. That's how good he is.
So casting-wise you got some cameos from great actors (Turturro and Voight), hot chicks (Megan Fox!!) and him. Spot on.
Then you got the robots. It is really amazing how good they look. Their updated design is great, they move graciously despite their apparent weight and like they actually are in the picture.
And then you get the action and on that aspect you know you can trust Bay to blow thing up like no one.
I was just a bit anoyed at the end that the Optimus Prime / Megatron fight was so "cut", there are times were you actually don't really see what's happening and you WANT to see. I mean it's cool!
But it didn't spoil the experience for me.
So yeah, great fun.
You could wonder how much brain damage it gives you but certainly less than an alcoholic night out...
